Shell Mold Casting

metal casting molds, heavy metal cast

Shell mold casting, also known as shell molding or shell process, is a precise casting method that uses a resin-coated sand mold to create detailed and accurate castings with a smooth surface finish.
The process involves the following steps:
1.Creating a pattern: A metal or wooden pattern is made to represent the desired shape of the casting. It is slightly larger to account for shrinkage.

2.Making the mold: The pattern is mounted on a plate and placed in a flask. Sand mixed with resin is poured into the flask, forming the mold cavity.

3.Hardening the mold: The mold is heated to make the resin harden and form a solid shell.

4.Removing the pattern: The flask is opened, and the pattern is taken out, leaving a cavity in the shape of the desired casting.

5.Pouring and cooling: Molten metal is poured into the cavity, and it cools down and solidifies, taking the shape of the mold.

6.Removing the shell: The solidified casting is taken out of the mold by breaking the shell and removing any remaining sand.
Shell mold casting offers precise dimensions, smooth surfaces, and is commonly used in industries like automotive and aerospace.
